What Happened to Pink Diamond

jenhedgehog:

Well, for a start… not Rose Quartz!

We’ve finally seen the elusive Pink Diamond and, in a lot of ways, her appearance has raised more questions than answers.  However, I think it sheds some very valuable light onto how she was, potentially, really shattered.

To start, let’s take a look at Pink…

image

Doesn’t she look a lot like Rose Quartz?  From a distance, to the untrained eye, could she perhaps be mistaken for Rose?  She’s also nowhere near as tall as the other Diamonds, so her height wouldn’t necessarily give her away.

Bear in mind that the only firsthand account of Pink’s shattering that we’ve ever been given was from Eyeball – a Gem whose powers of observation are so lax that she believed a shapeshifted Amethyst was, in fact, Jasper.

Blue Zircon raised the point back in The Trial that it’d be impossible for Rose else to get that close to the palanquin – and she was right.  What if Eyeball didn’t see Rose approaching the palanquin, but Pink Diamond herself?

This could mean that the person who shattered Pink Diamond was already waiting for her inside the palanquin – Pink then stepped outside and was shattered before her entourage could help her.

I know that this contradicts something, though…

image

“Now, as the records show Pink Diamond was shattered just outside a palanquin much like this.  Witnesses say Pink had just stepped out and had only taken a few steps forward when Rose attacked her from the front!”

“Rose attacked her from the front” – according to the records. Again, we have no firsthand accounts of the shattering whatsoever, we only have the word of these ancient records. And wouldn’t it be easy to manipulate the records (or, indeed, somehow influence the witnesses’ statements) if, say, there was some sort of cover-up involved…?

Which leads nicely to my next point – if Rose Quartz didn’t shatter Pink Diamond, then who did?

The answer to that, I believe, is White Diamond.

No, I’m not suggesting White Diamond did it herself.  I’m suggesting that she got someone else to do her dirty work for her.

Pink Diamond was shattered with a sword, according to Blue Diamond. Now, it’d be incredibly difficult to do that to a real diamond – unless you were to strike the gem along a weak facet or a fault line, in which case one good thwack would cleave it clean in half.

So, let’s look at Pink Diamond’s Gem:

image

It’s a brilliant cut diamond… but it’s upside-down.  Could this be some sort of defect?   Bear in mind that the vast majority of Pink’s Gems who we’ve seen up to now have been defective in some way.  If Pink Diamond’s Gem was physically faulty too, then it wouldn’t take very much to break it.  It would, however, take a skilled blade-wielder.

And who do we know who’s incredibly good with a sword?

image

Who do we know who seems unable to talk about the past?

image

Who do we know who appears to have belonged to White Diamond in the past?

image

Pearl.  Our Pearl.

No-one would question White Diamond’s Pearl accessing the palanquin. And because of White Diamond’s presumed position as the overall leader of the Diamonds, she could easily manipulate the court records and/or the witnesses in order to put Rose Quartz in the frame instead – giving the rebellion a bad name.

So, why would White Diamond want rid of Pink?  That’s where things get a little tricky.

It might be because Pink  was defective; after all, doesn’t Homeworld pride itself on perfection?  As pointed out in this excellent post, Pink is very different from her mural; almost like the other Diamonds were trying to cover up her defectiveness.  We also see Pink clashing with Yellow in Jungle Moon’s flashback, implying that there was some sort of disagreement or tension among the Diamonds a long time ago.

Could this tension even have lead to Pink Diamond starting the rebellion in the first place?  It’s entirely possible – we know Rose Quartz led it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she started it.  That’d give White a solid reason to want to get rid of her.

And what of Pearl?  What if she felt bad for what she did – and that’s why she ended up joining the rebellion? We know that she and Rose had a very close relationship, so could Rose have played along with the idea that she herself shattered Pink in order to protect Pearl?  I think it’s possible.
